Patchwork Quilts

Hello! I have been in Spain for about 24 hours, and so far things have been going well. The flights were long but good. I flew from Minneapolis to Newark and from Newark direct to Madrid, where the group of us flying together (23 total) got on a bus that the school sent to fetch us from the airport. Toledo is about an hour outside of Madrid, and is an ancient walled city. Perfect for the history buff in me. When we flew into Spain, we came from the northwest corner of the peninsula and flew over many small towns. It was pretty cool because they all had roads running out from the city center like spokes in a bike wheel. I will post pictures when I can, but for now they are on my camera and I am on a school computer. The farmland we flew over looked like a continuous patchwork quilt..all pieced together in a bunch of different ways unlike America where they are all fairly square or irrigated circles.

It´s very yellow here. The dirt, the buildings, even the trees fare on the yellow side of green. Not a brilliant yellow, but a yellowish brown. When I was in Spain my senior year of high school we came in February, so I imagined the yellow color to be a product of winter, envisioning summer to be more colorful, but apparently not.

My host family is very friendly. They don´t speak much english, but in the 24 hours I have been here, I can already tell my Spanish is coming back. I can understand enough to get by for now, but I'm having trouble formulating complex sentances and thoughts. I´ve said a lot of 'si' and 'no' and 'yo se' or 'no se'. (yes, no, i know, i don´t know). That should change soon though. This morning we had some time to kill after we were done with the placement exam and a group of eight of us went walking around for a bit and ended up sitting outside a cafe for a while. It was fun. Anyways. I need to go so I can figure out which classes I am going to take. Classes start tomorrow.

Love you!

Crossing the boarder between the Atlantic Ocean and the north-west corner of Spain!
